The Ringstraße boulevard is a part of the Austrian UNESCO World Heritage. The magnificent boulevard circling the historic city centre was constructed in the mid-19th century in place of the former city walls and the slope leading up to them.  Along the boulevard, grand buildings like the Vienna State Opera, Parliament, City Hall, Burgtheater, the Stock Exchange and numerous small palaces were built.

See the sights from the comfort of the Vienna Ring Tram, rain or shine. An audio guide provides information on the sights in eight languages, as well as a kids’ channel and an audio channel in the Viennese dialect. The Vienna Ring Tram starts from Schwedenplatz every 30 minutes.

Highlights

  • Admire the magnificent buildings along the Ringstraße boulevard, such as Parliament and the Museums of Art and Natural History

Did you know:

…that the first horse-drawn tram in Vienna ran in 1865?
…that the electrification and municipalisation of Vienna’s trams began in 1897?
…that the first traffic light in Vienna was installed in 1926 at the crossing at the Vienna State Opera?

Things to see:

In 1857, Emperor Francis Joseph I made the decision to raze the city walls and construct a boulevard lined with magnificent buildings. Today, the Ringstraße is one of the world’s most beautiful boulevards, even though many plans, such as additions to the Imperial Palace, were never completed.
