During the run-up to Christmas, Vienna is well worth a visit with its many Christmas and Advent markets! In addition to the famous Viennese Christmas Dream at the town hall, the winter market on Riesenradplatz and the medieval Advent market at the Museum of Military History, we have put together a list of the most beautiful Viennese Christmas markets for you.

During the pre-Christmas period, the entire city center is adorned with beautiful lighting and Advent decorations and invites its visitors to stroll and shop. In addition to the famous Viennese Christmas Dream at the town hall, the winter market on Riesenradplatz and the medieval Advent market at the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum, there are many other Christmas markets, all of which exude their own charm.

1. Winter market on Riesenradplatz


The Prater rocks! The Prater is transformed into a magical winter world for friends of music and the pre-Christmas season. In addition to culinary delicacies, you have the opportunity for a unique experience here. A varied program with live concerts, from rock to gospel choirs, awaits the guests. And the best - the winter market on Riesenradplatz is open until January 9th, 2022! Don´t miss out the live concerts every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 pm - from gospel to pop to soul everything is there.

Tip: How about a ride on the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel with a unique view of the Prater? Or a soaring flight with the Vienna Flight over the roofs? Or a visit to the Madame Tussauds Museum directly on the Prater?

2. The ART ADVENT organic advent market on Karlsplatz

Also this year the ART ADVENT opens its doors at Karlsplatz and has made sustainability, regionality and quality its business. It is still the only Advent market in Austria that exclusively offers organic-certified gastronomy and high-quality handicrafts. Despite Covid prevention measures, there will be the traditional walking acts and the nostalgic sounds of the Werkelmann with his Lerchenauer barrel organ can be heard at various places in the market.

3. The Advent market in the transport museum Remise


Far away from the hustle and bustle of tourists, this small Advent market is a real insider tip! There are not only delicious delicacies from hearty to sweet, but also gift ideas for the whole family.
The waiting time for the Christ Child is shortened at this Advent market and is definitely worth a visit. Away from tourists, the Advent village offers classic car rides, ice stock sport (reservation recommended) and a children's tinkering room, as well as many classic delicacies. The underground stars and the gospel choir with live music provide the extra portion of Christmas spirit.

Tip: The Oldtimer Bim drives around the museum every Sunday, unique and sure to be unforgettable!

4. The Christmas market on Spittelberg

Between romantic Biedermeier houses, nostalgic cobblestones and Christmas lights, this Christmas market is popular by the locals. Very centrally located through the nearby Mariahilferstrasse shopping mile, this Advent market is still a bit remote from the hustle and bustle. High quality craftsmanship and sustainable fashion are offered here. Another highlight of the Christmas market is the sustainable recycling crib in Gutenberggasse and amazes young and old.

Tip: The peephole wall at the Christmas market on Spittelberg is a beautiful photo backdrop for Christmas family pictures.

5. The impressive Christmas market in front of Schönbrunn Palace

The royal ambience and the unique historical backdrop make the Schönbrunn Palace Christmas market more unique than any other Advent market. Exclusive products, traditional handicrafts such as wood carving, nostalgic toys and sustainable Christmas decorations made of glass, wood, ceramics, paper or pewter. The culture and Christmas market in front of Schönbrunn Palace offers all this and much more. The lovingly decorated huts, the crib and the culture market offer a unique pre-Christmas experience.

6. The medieval Advent market in front of the Army History Museum

This Advent market offers a pre-Christmas atmosphere in a medieval ambience.
Not only fans of the Middle Ages get their money's worth here, because in addition to fencing demonstrations, fire shows, Christmas fairy tales and live music, everyone from young to old gets their unique experience. Extraordinary costumes and decorations and Christmas punch according to an old recipe ensure a trip back in time.

Tip: During the opening times of the market, the Army History Museum can also be visited with free admission.

7. Belvedere Palace

The Christmas market at Belvedere Palace should definitely be visited at dusk. Because then the Belvedere Palace becomes a breathtaking fairytale backdrop, lit by a sea of ​​lights. Accompanied by Christmas chants by gospel choirs, there is a colorful program at the Advent market at Belvedere Palace.
There is a lot of craftsmanship to be found, as a perfect souvenir from Vienna, but also as a Christmas present. Surrounded by the scent of roasted almonds and mulled wine, there are also culinary delicacies for the whole family. Worth mentioning and unique are the children's nostalgia carousel and the reindeer railway, which make children's eyes shine and awaken great memories.

No visit to Vienna without seeing Steffl! This Christmas market is located directly at St. Stephen's Cathedral and is the perfect stop for mulled wine and roasted almonds.
